Born in Glasgow, Charles Rennie Mackintosh trained as an architect and studied at evening classes in the Glasgow School of Art. At the turn of the century he became one of the forerunners of the distinctive 'Glasgow' style of Art Nouveau. For twenty years he worked as an architect/designer in Glasgow, where all of his best-known work was created and much of it still remains, yet he left the city under-appreciated and died in London in relative obscurity.
